The Building Blocks of Integrative Empathy

5 Skills and Their Underlying Theory

There is a lot of interest in empathy, both in science and the public domain.  This results in many definitions and approaches to empathy. The interest is great, but we face the risk of not seeing the wood for the trees. Details are important for our understanding. Yet they can obscure the broader picture of empathy. We, therefore, define five distinct, but connected, aspects of Integrative Empathy with resulting behaviours:

  • Bring your undivided attention with self-empathy
  • Create and maintain connection with kinesthetic empathy
  • Foster mutual understanding with reflective empathy
  • Diversify perspectives with imaginative empathy
  • Ensure actionable outcomes with empathic creativity

This short course presents the theoretical basis of these five building blocks of Integrative Empathy. It, therefore, provides you with important details to support your empathy practice. It also guides you to understand which empathy approach is most useful for your purpose.
